Those with special interests in things like politics, holiday travel, lobbying, and news often use web sites to get information and meet people who share their influences. While these are good resources, they often do not provide the one on one meetings that people want. Instead of just using a web site to network with other people who share your interests, you should consider finding a special interest organization in your area. There are certainly no lack of special interest groups in most cities. You can find organizations that promote holiday trips and traveling to new locations, making documentary videos, policy activists, talking about politics and advocacy, and professional business planning. If you are a member of a trade union, then you might also want to make a connection with a special interest organization with people who can help you promote your own ideas so that you can influence local and national government to make laws that will have a generally positive effect on your group. Some organizations charge membership dues to their members, so you should be certain to ask if they expect some sort of monetary contribution before you are pressured to join. If they charge dues, then you should ask them what types of benefits they can offer you. Some have connections that will not only help you meet new people but can also get you discounts at hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and other locations that you might want to visit. If the benefits outweigh the costs, then you should consider signing up.
